The Groove Afrika story spilled onto my ears in late 2010. At that time it was just an idea short of a plan, an inspired political science student and ex UCT radio drive time show host Kgabo Senyatsi known to his fans and followers as DJ Afrique burst into the audio production room and whizzed across to my pc opening up a truck load of tabs on the explorer anxiously clicking on songs and saying ekwa! Wa di tseba di kosha tse? (Listen! do you know these songs?).“No! and I don’t want to hear that jungle monkey stuff” I’d reply with anger, at that time I was just an avid hip-hop listener and was falling in love with jazz, lounge and a bunch of other contemporary stuff, the last thing I needed in my head space was a bunch of drum beating tribal house music. After days of this recurring incident I was successfully re-infected with house music as a whole and that is when Dj Afrique started breaking down his goals for 2011, this man clearly wanted to restructure the DJ’ing game, improve both the level of house music and the needy student nightlife that Cape Town had to offer at that time.
In 2011 the ninja came back to Cape Town round house kicking! Bringing along his mentor and childhood friend Dj and sound engineer Kagiso Kalane (Kagza Dj) it was then that I started to notice the plan unfold, the boys formed the duo Groove Afrika and started playing at local clubs in Rondebosch Cape town. After putting in the hours and raking in the crowds, Groove Afrika began setting their sights on bigger goals, eliminating the competition and rubbing shoulders with likeminded Dj’s such as p.H. They soon found themselves headlining posters and being supporting acts to some of the biggest Dj’s in the City of Cape Town, playing in larger venues and for larger crowds.
It wasn’t easy for the two to juggle school and the rapidly growing fame and demand for Groove Afrika but these cats found a way to create a healthy balance, concentrating on their education and saying peace out to the night for a short while only to come back with their biggest event ever…The Groove Afrika launch party. This party was by far the sickest party, with the line-up consisting of a league of extra ordinary Dj’s :- Loyd, Lyle, Tino, Leo Large ft. fritzz the Cat, p.H and hold up…hold the f@*% up… The legendary Dj fresh who closed up an amazing and well deserved event.
The duo’s diverse musical taste is extra smooth with a touch of soothing soul, their musical collection also reveals heavy notes of jazz, deep house and hip-hop, these boys surely know how to keep people on their feet and panting for more, I guess the takeover has begun and honestly there’s no escaping it.
